'NXT Takeover Toronto' Latest News & Updates: Samoa Joe Wins Back NXT Championship!

"NXT Takeover Toronto" is the first major stop of the WWE at "Survivor Series" weekend, one of the big four events in the pro wrestling company's calendar year. It's the last big event for NXT, the company's developmental brand, in the year before heading into "WrestleMania" weekend in Orlando in April. The show's main event was the heavily built-up NXT Championship rematch between previous titleholder Samoa Joe, and current champion, Japanese import Shinsuke Nakamura.

Samoa Joe winning the NXT Championship back in the "NXT Takeover Toronto" main event was a very big deal. The current pattern of NXT predicted that he'd lose the rematch and possibly go on to either "WWE RAW" or "WWE SmackDown Live," helping fill their depth chart at the upper midcard. Instead, his win means he'll be staying down at the farm league longer than expected; on the plus side, it opens up questions of whether Nakamura, the hotter prospect, will be called up soon.

Another title change happened in "NXT Takeover Toronto" as DIY, the team of indy wrestling blue-chippers Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa, finally capture the NXT Tag Team Championship from the Revival. The two-out-of-three falls match, which is usually the Revival's specialty, was an intense affair, and their win solidified their place in the company as two valuable talents. Because they lost the title, the Revival are now the subject of speculation as to whether they'll go up, but their services may be more needed in NXT still.

Three other matches happened in the undercard of "NXT Takeover Toronto," and here are the official results from WWE.com. In the opening match, former TNA standout Bobby Roode defeated homegrown talent Tye Dillinger in a solid bout. The Authors of Pain, managed by legendary manager Paul Ellering, defeated Australian tag team TM61 to win the second annual Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic; expect them to challenge for the tag titles soon. Meanwhile, NXT Women's Champion Asuka successfully retained her title against returning WWE veteran Mickie James, who also came from TNA. All in all, the event was another solid one from NXT, with most critics agreeing, especially PWTorch.
