Wolfenstein: The New Order trailer shows Nazis ruling the world (just how bad can it get?)

Bethesda Software has released a new trailer mixing live action, CG and Nazi re-imagining of iconic twentieth century photographs for the MachineGames developed Wolfenstein: The New Order.

The over two minute trailer sets up the premise of series hero William "B.J." Blazkowicz waking up from a comma to realize that the Nazis have won World War II. Outside of Nazi's dropping an atomic bomb on America, the re-imagined photographs ranging from Alfred Eisenstaedt's V-J Day in Time Square to The Beatles' Abby Road cover. Citizens have even participated in futile attempts at uprising thanks to Nazi technology like robots that lends to the game's sci-fi vibe.

Wolfenstein: The New Order's new trailer also features a reveal of antagonist Frau Engel laughing psychotically before ending with thirty seconds of gameplay that's suppose to be running on next-generation hardware. Running on the same id Tech 5 that ran Rage, Wolfenstein: The New Order's seems to include a mix of realistic and futuristic weaponry, dual welding and some stealth elements with the ability to silently stab enemies in the neck. Those expecting multiplayer may be disappointed to know that the game is single-player only.

Though the thought of a Nazi ran world is frightening and downright offensive to many, Bethesda is quick to remind many that the game is an alternate retelling of history.

"Wolfenstein: The New Order is a fictional story set in an alternate universe in the 1960's. Names, characters, organizations, locations and events are either imaginary or depicted in a fictionalized manner," Bethesda said in a release. " The story and contents of this game are not intended to and should not be construed in any way to condone, glorify or endorse the beliefs, ideologies, events, actions, persons or behaviors of the Nazi regime or to trivialize its war crimes, genocide, and other crimes against humanity."

Set for release on PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox360 sometime later this year, Wolfenstein: The New Order also plans to launch on next-generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft at a later date.
