Hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest recently topped the Billboard 200 albums chart for the first time in over two decades. A Tribe Called Quest's new album, "We Got It From Here... Thank You 4 Your Service," debuted at No. 1.
Billboard reported that the A Tribe Called Quest's new album was launched on Nov. 11, 2016 through Epic Records and earned 135,000 equivalent album units in the week that ended on November 17. 112,000 of the total were in traditional album sales.
A Tribe Called Quest last topped the Billboard 200 list on Aug. 17, 1996 for a week with their album, "Beats, Rhymes and Life." Their first No. 1 was also the 20th hip-hop album to top the Billboard 200.
The gap between A Tribe Called Quest's two top 1 creations is the longest in Billboard's hip-hop chart history, at 20 years and three months. The last record-holder is Jeezy with eight years and two months.
Among all music genres, Lionel Richie holds the widest gap between No. 1s with 25 years and six months. Bob Dylan waited the longest among all living acts with 30 years and six months, while Ray Charles had the longest wait among living and dead acts with 42 years and four months.
Yahoo revealed that A Tribe Called Quest consisted of members Ali Shaheed, Q-Tip and Phife Dawg, although Phife Dawg died in March 2016. Aside from A Tribe Called Quest, four other hip-hop acts have No. 1 albums that spanned at least 10 years, namely Nas, Jay Z, Eminem and Kanye West.
"We Got It From Here" is A Tribe Called Quest's fourth consecutive studio album to make the top 10, as well as the group's first since Dawg's death. "We Got It From Here" is the last album that A Tribe Called Quest had with Phife Dawg and is billed as their final album.
It is the act's first studio release since "The Love Movement" in 1998. The rest of the Billboard 200 top 10 is set to be announced on November 21. More updates and details on A Tribe Called Quest are expected soon.
