The sci-fi exhilarating franchise "Star Trek" is back to explore the cosmos and hit our TV screens. Contrary to what most "Star Trek" fans perceive, "Star Trek: Discovery" is on a separate timeline with the current "Star Trek" movies. The first cast members have been confirmed already.

Earlier this year, CBS unraveled the first teaser of the upcoming sci-fi series "Star Trek: Discovery". The official title was revealed during the 50th anniversary of "Star Trek" San Diego Comic-Con panel and Bryan Fuller, the co-creator of the series, announced that the official title is "Star Trek: Discovery". A month after, Bryan Fuller announced that the upcoming season will consist of 13 episodes. Though he prefers to limit the number of episodes to 10 in the succeeding seasons.

The approaching "Star Trek: Discovery" series is set 10 years before the events in the original "Star Trek" series. Fans will be following the crew of the USS Discovery exploring and discovering new civilizations and worlds --the mission to be of the USS Enterprise. The season's storyline revolves around "an incident and an event in "Star Trek" history that has never been explored.

In August, the first batch of actors of "Star Trek: Discovery" announced as part of the cast are: Michell Yeoh (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) to play Capt. Georgiou the commanding officer of another Starfleet vessel; Anthony Rapp (Dazzled & Confused, Rent) landed the role of crew member Lt. Staments a science officer specializing in Astromycology; and Doug Jones (Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy) as Lt. Saru, a science officer coming from a new alien species to the "Star Trek" universe.

A month after a few characters being revealed, it was reported that "Star Trek: Discovery" is slated to air on May 2017. According to Fuller, revamping the "Star Trek" series holds responsibility and mission -- to forge a bond with newcomers and fans to the series. This is the reason for pushing back the original premiere of January to May next year.
