‘Detective Pikachu’ News & Update: ‘Goosebumps’ Rob Letterman To Direct The Pokémon Movie, Pikachu Will Be The New Sherlock Holms

Fans of Pokémon will be very excited to know that "Goosebumps" director Rob Letterman is going to direct Legendary's Pokémon movie "Detective Pikachu". The live-action film is scripted by Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch. Perlman has 'Guardians of the Galaxy' to his credit. Universal will oversee the distribution of the film outside Japan while Toho will handle it in Japan.

Legendary Entertainment acquired the rights of "Detective Pikachu" in July when "Pokémon Go" was creating a frenzy among the gamers. Detective Pikachu, the character was first introduced in a video game in Japan. Satoshi Tajiri first created Pokémon in 1995 and the franchise has TV series, video games, movies and comic books, as per The Hollywood Reporter. The film's production will start in 2017.

The film "Detective Pikachu" as suggested by its name will center around detective Pikachu. The character is already very popular with the Japanese video game "Great Detective Pikachu". With its Sherlock Holms' cap and magnifying glass, it looks every bit a detective, reported Collider. Although it is weaker than other characters in physical strength, no one can beat it in smartness. Detective Pokémon solves all the mysteries and drinks espresso. The details of the film are still unknown but it is confirmed that the plot will revolve around a new storyline in Pokémon Universe.

Rob Letterman has "Goosebumps", "Monsters vs. Aliens", "Shark Tale" and upcoming "Dungeons and Dragons" to his credit which is enough to guess that he is a big fan of weird animated creatures, stated Screen Crush. He will be a good fit for the film as he already has ample experience in both animation and live-action.

The makers are expecting a huge audience for the film as Pokémon cartoons, comic books, video games, and trading cards already have a huge fan following. This is not the first Pokémon film. The first film, Pokémon: The First Movie came in 1999 and a year later Pokémon: "The Movie 2000" was released. Some other Pokémon movies are "Pokémon 3: The Movie" (2001), "Pokémon 4Ever" (2002) and "Pokémon Heroes: Latios and Latias" (2003).
