MMA News: Conor McGregor ‘You Can Play with Those Fake Belts All You Want’

Conor McGregor has finally broken his silence on “relinquishing” his UFC featherweight title. Speaking at an event in Ireland, the lightweight champion was asked about the UFC’s decision to strip him of his other belt. McGregor didn’t cut any corners and made his opinion known that he is still a two-weight world champion.

”Them belts are mine,” Conor McGregor said succinctly when asked to clarify if he indeed relinquished the featherweight title or if the UFC stripped him of it. “Whatever they want to say, they can say ‘Ah, well we took the belt and now it’s this guy’s belt.’ You can play with those fake belts all you want. Jose [Aldo] was KO’d. Eddie [Alvarez] was KO’d. You’re looking at the two-weight world champion and that’s it.”

According to the UFC’s official statement, Conor McGregor reportedly “relinquished” his featherweight title that he won against Jose Aldo last December. Following the groin injury that led to Daniel Cormier pulling out of his title fight with Anthony Johnson at UFC 206, the UFC made the matchup between Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis as an interim featherweight title fight and promoted Aldo to full title holder. Conor McGregor also said that they would have to take the belts away from him “physically.”

The Irishman was also asked if his recently received boxing license meant that a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr. was on the radar. Conor McGregor clarified that what originally happened was that it was Mayweather who called him out, and that only opened his eyes to the possibilities of potentially stepping inside the boxing ring.

“I don’t need Floyd. I don’t give a [expletive] about Floyd,” Conor McGregor defiantly said while also pointing out that apart from the Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather fight, “he owns all the numbers.”
