Here's the good news for those of you planning on buying Sony's next-gen console: If you have a headset from Astro Gaming or Sony, you should be fine to use either one for the PlayStation 4.
It was recently revealed by Game Informer that while there will be some hiccups at first, a forthcoming system update will take care of all the issues to make sure headsets are in full, working order.
The bad news? Any other headset, specifically, any that relies on bluetooth for chat, won't work at all at launch, or the foreseeable future.
"If you have a Sony-branded PULSE gaming headset (or the elite edition of that product), you will need to wait for a system update coming in the future. It seems that those will not work at all at launch," reported Game Informer. "Any other headset that relies on bluetooth for chat will not work at all. If you have something that relies on USB for chat (like the Astro mixamps and Astro A50 wireless system), you'll eventually be able to use those. An update will be coming in the future."
"Any headset that relies on digital optical for game audio will continue to provide that out of the box. You just won't be able to chat yet."
In the giant step forward that is technological advancement, not everyone and their gear is going to be able to stay up to pace, making that $200 you shelled out for your new Turtle Beaches quite the disappointing investment.
While you'd think that might be a reason to switch over to Microsoft's Xbox One, you'd be wrong, as the company is having similar headset issues for its own upcoming system. Legacy devices feature a different connector, and will need an adaptor to work on the new console.
Luckily, headsets are included for both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 at purchase.
Under the hood, the PS4 boasts Supercharged PC architecture, X86 CPU, Enhanced PC GPU, 8GB Unified Memory, Local HDD. It will support the same PlayStation Plus service as the Vita and PS3. However, a Plus subscription will be required for online multiplayer games, but not for additional media services like Netflix. Sony has also updated the Dual Shock controllers with a touch screen and improved shoulder triggers.
The PlayStation 4 is set to release on November 15 in North America and on November 29 in Europe. Day one games available for the system include Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Killzone Shadow Fall, Madden NFL 25, Minecraft, NBA 2K14, Watch Dogs,Need for Speed: Rivals, and more. It will retail for $399.
