‘Westworld’ Season 2 Air Date, Spoilers, News & Update: Season 2 Won’t Debut Until 2018; Hosts Will Escape Park?

Fans of HBO's "Westworld" will have to be extra patient as it now appears that they will have to wait for more than a year for "Westworld" season 2. The freshman season of the network's new sci-fi thriller ended on Sunday, Dec. 4.

"Westworld" season 1 came to a stunning conclusion, answering the many questions fans of the Western action/adventure have had since October and leaving the show on a very cliffhanger-y note. In the season ender, titled "The Bicameral Mind," Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins) appeared to have died after Dolores Abernathy (Evan Rachel Wood) shot him in the head. Maeve Millay (Thandie Newton) almost escaped and William (Jimmi Simpson) and the Man in Black (Ed Harris) were revealed to be one and the same. Fans now have to wait until "Westworld" season 2 debuts to find out if Ford will somehow reappear and what will happen to the hosts now that they have achieved sentience.

Unfortunately, "Westworld" executive producer Jonathan Nolan recently confirmed that "Westworld" season 2 won't air in the new year. "Definitely not coming back until 2018," Nolan told The Hollywood Reporter. "We said to the network very early that this was a different kind of show, having gone through the experience of making the pilot."

Nolan also previewed "Westworld" season 2, telling the outlet that the next chapter of the popular series is poised to explore the concept of control vs. chaos. It will also show fans the broader world beyond the amusement park. "We never had any intention of staying in one place," Nolan explained. "We don't want to shoot on the same sets for 10 years. We want to blow the sets up and move on to another piece of the story."

As for what the characters will be up to in "Westworld" season 2, co-creator Lisa Joy hinted that at least one of the hosts could succeed in escaping from the park. In an interview with Vulture, Joy said that the hosts' intellects are continuously growing, which means that it's only a matter of time before they figure out how to get to the outside world. "I would imagine that at least one, ultimately, gets a bigger look at the world," she said. "Who and when, I'm not quite sure yet."

HBO has yet to announce the official release date for "Westworld" season 2. It is nonetheless expected to premiere sometime in 2018.
