George R.R. Martin may be taking his sweet time finishing his sixth book, "The Winds of Winter," but thankfully he's offered some details about what to expect from it. Apparently, there's very little optimism to be expected from the sixth installment to the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series, as the author revealed several dark undertones to the sequel.

Death and White Walkers
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, George R.R. Martin revealed that "The Winds of Winter" is going to be a bittersweet book. Winter has indeed come to Westeros, and the author warned that winter is the time "that things die." This means that a lot of fans' favorite characters, like Sansa Stark and Tyrion Lannister, could be felled in the upcoming sequel to the series.
He also mentioned something about "cold and ice and darkness" filling the world in "The Winds of Winter," which could be a not-so-subtle hint about the impending threat of White Walkers. Fans would know that these undead creatures have been ravaging certain parts of the Seven Kingdoms, so it's possible that they may have made their way into more significant locations, like The Wall.
Characters in dark places
"The Winds of Winter" author also mentioned characters who are in dark places right now. As of the recent canon, there are a number of candidates who fit the bill: Arya Stark, who's recently set loose on a murder spree, Daenerys Targaryen, who in the books is dealing with the fallout of a failed empire and a lost dragon, and Jon Snow, whose resurrection from the dead is not yet explored in the book series.
