‘Legends of Tomorrow’ season 2 episode 8 recap, midseason premiere date, news: Legion assembled in finale; Rip Hunter back with American accent

The midseason finale for the first half of "Legends of Tomorrow" season 2 came with a bang and a slew of action-filled scenes. A lot of questions were answered on episode 8 "The Chicago Way" which was a salute to the classic "The Untouchables" and featured Al Capone as the mayor of the city in what was considered a time aberration. The Legion of Doom was busy wreaking havoc in mobster-infested Chicago in the 1920s.

The Legion, now numbering four, with Eobald Thawne, also known as Reverse-Flash (Matt Letscher), Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough), and Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman) team up with Al Capone (Isaac Keoughan) to bring about the time aberration and lure the Legends to 1927 in The Windy City.

The trap works, as the Legends troop in to work on the time aberration. They arrive just in time to rescue Eliot Ness (Cole Vigue), who is heavily injured. Sara (Caity Lotz) and Martin (Victor Garber) get kidnapped as the Legends tried to put one on over Capone and the Legion. Eobard makes Sara give him an amulet she got from Dahrk way back. But Sara resists him until the Legends rescue her and Martin.

A complication arises when it turns out Martin is really a disguised Eobald who ransacks the Legends' ship for the amulet, all the while Malcolm keeps up its barrage against the ship. Amaya (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) tries to subdue Eobard, but he escapes with the amulet as Sara had to sacrifice it for Martin's sake.

While the Legends are able to correct the timeline aberration, Eobald reveals the secrets of the amulet. It would take them to the exact location of the Spear of Destiny through a holo map. The Spear has the ability to rewrite reality, but they must find Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) for them to acquire it.

The midseason/winter finale ended with the reveal as to Rip's whereabouts: The Captain now sports an American accent and has been spending his time in the 1960s in Los Angeles as a film director making sci-fi movies that are apparently based on his own experiences.

So while the finale answered two main questions besides many smaller ones, there are now even more questions in their place. Firstly, the main goal of the Legion of Doom was uncovered; it was the Spear they had been looking for all the while. Secondly, fans have been wondering where Rip had gone to this season. And now they know.

It is expected that the second half of "Legends of Tomorrow" season 2 will have The Legends and the Legion racing against each other to find the Spear. There's also that warning hanging over the Legends that Richardson-Seller intimated at in an interview with CinemaBlend about a big character being brought back but somehow not quite the same. Was this in reference to Rip? Now that he has been found, what will the group dynamics be on the Waverider, with Sara now looked to for leadership on the team?

As for Rip, will he be a different person? Will he even remember the life he had with the Legends? Fans of the show will be able to put these questions to rest when "Legends of Tomorrow" season 2 returns on Jan. 24 on the CW 8 PM.
