According to Elizabeth Banks, who plays Rita Repulsa, her character in "Power Rangers" movie is different from the original villain. Her character will have a totally new backstory and this variant will be much closer to the Rangers than the original.

According to The Wrap, Goldar's version in the upcoming "Power Rangers" movie is designed for one mission -- to penetrate the force field that safeguards the Zeo crystal. This crystal (artifact) taps into the dimension called the Morphing Grid, which is the source of the Rangers' powers. Long ago, the Zeo crystal was hidden on Earth to protect it from those who want to wield its powers and use it for destruction. It is protected by a force field that can vaporize anyone who touches it, although, Goldar is an exception to this. This makes him very dangerous.
