'War For Planet Of The Apes' Release Date, Spoilers, News & Updates: First Trailer Released

The first trailer of the War for Planet of the Apes features all-new characters and locations, setting up what seems to be the biggest confrontation between humans and apes and upset the status quo between the two species.

The 2-minute trailer is filled with carnage and action, showing the growing tension in the ape-human conflict. The movie picks up two years after Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), where Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his fellow apes successfully take over a human settlement. Its successor, War for Planet of the Apes continues with the deteriorating relationship between apes and humans, pitting Caesar against the Colonel (Woody Harrelson). The Colonel is one of the last of the armed guys who's pulling the strings in military operations against the apes and he's determined not to let the apes take control.

Producer Dylan Clark describes the film as a 65mm epic western, and confirms that the title is a giveaway of the state of affairs between humans and apes in the beginning of the movie. Clark also drops hints that there will be antagonism as well within the ape community, although Koba, the main antagonist of the second film will definitely not make an appearance in War of the Planet of the Apes.

Clark describes the plot of War of the Planet of the Apes in further detail, explaining that "Caesar goes on a Western like journey to kick Woody Harrelson's ass. And he finds out that Woody Harrelson has captured his apes. Feeling responsible, because he wasn't leading his apes, he goes in to get them. And he basically get captured. So they are all at this camp, which is at the top of we're calling it the Sierra Mountains." He adds that while in confinement, apes are forced to do things they're opposed to, and not all apes are on board with Caesar's plans.

Whatever the outcome is between Caesar and the Colonel, the titular battle in War of the Planet of the Apes will decide the fate of the planet.

War of the Planet of the Apes is set to be released on July 24, 2017.
