Samsung Latest News & Update: Rejoicing Over Supreme Court's Decision On Patent Case Against Apple?

The legal battle between Samsung and Apple is coming to an epic ending. The two giant leaders in the smartphone industry have been going at it for years. Smartphone users can now purchase the devices involved in the patent dispute.

In our previous report, it was explained that back in 2014 the jury decided over Apple which says that Samsung infringed on Apple's quick links patent. It also infringed on Apple's swipe to unlock patent. The court also ordered Apple to pay $158,400 for infringing on Samsung's patent video and photo gallery feature

The court's previous decision states that Apple won $400 million base on a percentage of the entire profit which Samsung has gotten from infringing Apple's smartphones. But according to The Verge, the South Korean company argued that it should not be wholly based on the "entire profit but only a part of the profit" as only part of the design of the smartphone was copied from Apple.

This December, the court released its decision which then ruled in favor of Samsung. It decided that the basis for calculating damages could be on the whole profit of infringing the product or based on an aliquot part of the product's profit. Clearly, the court declined to explain further on what really is the basis for calculating the damages and instead refer it back to Federal Circuit Court.

In fact on a report by The Hill, it states that the Supreme Court was persuaded by the letter of the law. It further explained that Justice Sotomayor, delivering the Court's majority opinion, wrote that the " article of manufacture" - a legal term that refers to both sold products to a consumer and a component of the said product - has a "broad meaning," and that an "article" could refer to "a particular thing.

Indeed the court's decision doesn't seem to be clear on such patent case. But referring it back might seem to suggest that Samsung will be getting a chance to reduce Apple's win.
