The Vampire Diaries series finale is around the corner and yet fans still will not let the idea of Elena returning to show before it truly and completely ends go. The Vampire Diaries Season 8 finale however, presents the perfect opportunity for Nina Dobrev's character to return to the show - save Ian Somerhalder's character Damon from totally ruining his life.
On December 9, fans were treated to a particularly gruesome episode, and more than ever, a very sad one. The episode's title called "The Next Time I Hurt Somebody, It Could Be You," is supposed to be a little bit cheery since the holidays are nearing, but it did not happen. A dinner party at the Salvatore mansion was crashed by guests Damon and Sybil, and all chaos broke loose. Damon stabs Stefan to death so that he can remember his Ripper past with Cade's assistance.
Fans learned that Cade is now more interested in good people with dark tendencies. He is no longer interested in people who are purely evil because they are now too boring for him. Instead, he wants the good people dying, so as to taunt Stefan further. Stefan however, struck a deal with Cade to turn off his humanity and become a full Ripper mode. He wants to finish all his demonic duties in one year then return to Mystic Falls. Cade is doubtful that Stefan will even want to return after a year of being in the dark side but the latter is confident.
Damon on the other hand seems already too far gone to ever rediscover his humanity again. But there just might be hope yet. Caroline gave Damon Elena's necklace as his Christmas gift but he did not open this until Sybil asked if the present is meant for her. When he put the necklace on Sybil's neck, he finally remembered Elena.
According to Screener TV, this is a breakthrough, a huge deal. Damon was not supposed to remember Elena anymore since she must be fully erased from his mind, now that he's fully evil. However, if he can remember her, probably because he loves her very deeply, there's some hope that the old Damon, with his snarky but still lovable ways, will come back.
Is this where the story is headed? Can The Vampire Diaries Season 8 finale give what fans have been yearning for? For Elena to return? Can the series finale feature a Nina Dobrev cameo so that Damon's humanity can return?
Ian Somehalder already told Variety that he has no idea where the story is heading, including whether his ex-girlfriend Nina Dobrev will grace the show for the fans. But he is not close to the idea. In fact, he wants the story to return to Elena.
"I think the best thing for Mystic Falls would be for these guys and all of these vampires and witches to just go away. Let Elena wake up and have these boys gone and never know any of this happened," he said.
Whether Elena returns for Damon or return without remembering either Damon and Stefan, fans are keeping their fingers crossed that Nina Dobrev can be seen on the Vampire Diaries Season 8 finale.
