Last year, we told you about a Colorado parent who bought his five-year-old child a used 3DS from GameStop as a Christmas present, only for the child to discover some sultry pictures left behind on the handheld from the previous owner. Now, a year later almost to the day, it's happened again.
WAVY10 News is reporting that a Hampton, Virginia father purchased a supposedly new 3DS from Walmart for his eight-year-old son two days before Christmas. Come the morning of the big day, the son and a few other family members were screwing around with the built-in camera, and happened across about a dozen pornographic images.
"It was a shocker because we had family here, and there were a lot of kids here," Mayhew told WAVY. "The kids were the ones that discovered those pictures." He also stated that given the timestamp of the pictures in question, the device was returned to Walmart, and re-sold as "new."
The station's "On Your Side" consumer advocacy program contacted Walmart for comment, but has yet to hear back. You can see the report in ints entireity below.
This sort of thing has happened with Walmart before. This time last year, a Talladega woman purchased a used 3DS from Walmart, only to take it home for her son to discover Christmas morning that the box was loaded with tissue paper and rocks.
WBRC Fox 6 was the first to cover the story, and luckily got a response from Walmart. According to Fox's report, "Wal-Mart tells us this is happening because people buy the merchandise and then return it to the store with the items missing. Employees are now checking the returned merchandise."
With the last porn-stocked 3DS, GameStop was considerably quicker than Walmart this year around, issuing the following statement: "GameStop is currently researching this situation. We have a rigorous quality control process in place to ensure that existing content is removed from all devices before they are re-sold. Out of millions of transactions each year, ones like this happen very rarely. Our number one priority is to make this right for our customer."
