'Horizon Forbidden West' Update 1.05 Fixes Major Gameplay, Visual Bugs

'Horizon Forbidden West' Gets Much-Needed Fixes With Update 1.05

"Horizon Forbidden West" is proving to be one of the biggest PlayStation launches of the year for both the PS4 and PS5. But for all the game's positive things, it's still not safe from major gameplay and visual bugs.

As such, developer Guerilla Games has rolled out Patch 1.05 to smooth out some of these issues. According to GamesRadar, one of the biggest bugs it fixes involves Aloy falling out of the world after skipping a cutscene, alongside other fixes to the main quests, side quests, and other world activities.

Aside from the fixes brought by Patch 1.05, there are also others that Guerilla devs are actively looking into the, most of which are player-reported. The subreddit for "Forbidden West" is a hotbed for these player reports, where developers are actively engaging with players at the moment.

If you'd like to see the patch notes for 1.05, PushSquare detailed them in an article. But here are some of the major ones dealing with a handful of major "Horizon Forbidden West" bugs:

  • Fixed a progression blocker affecting the main quest "Reach for the Stars," where players will encounter the issue whenever they reload a certain auto-save after completing the quest
  • Fixed the interlude quest "Eye of the Earth" where Aloy would fall off the world after skipping a cutscene
  • Fixed an issue with the Second Chance skill where it wouldn't work correctly
  • Corrected oversharpening when using HDR mode
  • Corrected a handful of streaming issues with some settlements, which would stream in and stream out again randomly
  • Fixed several crashes
  • Slight performance and cosmetic improvements

Guerilla Games has promised that the team is hard at work at fixing more issues with the game as time goes on. Nevertheless, this doesn't take away from the fact that PS4 and PS5 versions of "Forbidden West" don't have major differences aside from the resolution and frame rate, which are obviously far better on the newer Sony console.

Are 'Horizon Forbidden West' Bugs Bad?

Thankfully, Guerilla Games made sure that "Forbidden West" won't launch in a broken state like some other big games of the past few years (i.e. "Cyberpunk 2077"). But some bugs that have been plaguing Guerilla's new open-world opus since launch can be quite jarring, which is why their devs are working hard to fix them in the shortest possible time.

Perhaps one of the most noticeable ones is texture pop-in, which seems to affect both the PS4 and PS5. In a review by the YouTube channel Skill Up, they showed how egregious the texture and asset pop-in can be. Check at the 6:20 mark:

At first, some players assumed that the pop-in problems were due to the PS4's aging hardware (specifically the much slower mechanical hard drive), which was actually the focus for Guerilla Games while they were developing "Horizon Forbidden West." But since the issue still persists on the PS5, which uses a blazing-fast SSD, this can now be confirmed as an in-game bug that needs a patch ASAP.

But compared to a lot of major game releases these past few years, "Horizon Forbidden West" bugs are very, very minimal on all current and last-gen PlayStation consoles.
