LOOK: 'Apex Legends' Is Finally Playable On The Steam Deck

"Apex Legends" is the latest game in the list of newly playable titles on Valve's Steam Deck after spending a bit of time in the "unplayable" category due to its anti-cheat software.

GameSpot reports that a Twitter user named Cary Golomb posted a video of the game running on the new handheld, though the 15-second video only showed the player looking for loot. The game runs smooth, nevertheless:

As you can see in both videos, "Apex Legends" on Steam Deck seems to run quite well, despite a handful of FPS drops at certain intervals. But this is a far better result, considering the massively popular shooter won't even run on the Deck around a year ago.

Its anti-cheat software called Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) proved to be not too friendly with Linux, which is what the Deck's native SteamOS is based on. According to AFKGaming, the problems with EAC have been ironed out by Respawn Entertainment by putting official support right within the game's main files.

Compatibility issues with Linux was the main problem not just with "Apex Legends" too, but also "Destiny 2," "PUBG," and "Rainbow Six Siege" as reported by GameSpot. Many players were hoping that Valve's Proton, a compatibility layer that allowed previously Windows-exclusive games to run on SteamOS on the Deck, would fix the problem.

But for now, it looks like "Apex Legends" on Steam Deck will be perfectly playable as long as you're not looking for a plus-60 FPS experience. The game's frame rate seems to fluctuate between 32-60 FPS (it's locked at 60 due to the handheld's 60Hz refresh rate), but stays smooth enough during gunplay to make things feasible.

What Else Is Playable On The Steam Deck So Far?

As of late, Valve's Deck Verified system is the only way to see which games are playable on the Steam Deck right out of the box. You can check right now which games on your Steam library are verified by logging into your Steam account using the Steam website. 

If you don't want to do that for some reason, here's another option. Go SteamDeck.com/en/verified, which Valve updates with games that have been tested and are playable with their handheld without needing tweaks.

 Among the most recently added games include former PlayStation exclusives "God Of War" and "Horizon Zero Dawn," as well as "ARK Survival Evolved," "Cuphead: Don't Deal With The Devil," and FromSoftware's newly released "Elden Ring" to name a few.

As Valve goes through with more games in the Steam library for their Deck Verified system, you can expect the game list to keep growing. But for now, it's good that one of the most popular competitive shooters out there can now be played on the go without the latency of streaming it in.
