"Pokemon Sword and Shield," the predecessor of the upcoming Gen IX mainline game, is heavily inspired by the United Kingdom. The whole Galar region traces its roots from Great Britain starting from its terrain, gyms, and other in-game elements.

As always, the three starters for every Pokemon game are Fire, Water, and Grass-type Pokemon. In this next-gen game, "Pokemon Scarlet & Violet'' introduced Sprigatito (grass), Fuecoco (fire), and Quaxly (water).

Sprigatito resembles a greenish cat, Fuecoco appears to be a croc of some sort, while Quaxly is a duck with a hat.

Moreover, the trailer suggests that the new region will be inspired this time from Spain. Judging from the names of the new Pokemon, it's likely where Game Freak borrowed the concept.

At the moment, there's no information yet about the stage 1 and 2 evolutions of the starters. However, some leaks pointed out their possible looks at the time of the release.

Leaked Starter Evolutions in 'Pokemon Scarlet & Violet'

Recently, GameNGuide spotted an archived thread on Boards.4 Channel.org. The forum tackles the potential Gen 8 leaks that Mr. X posted on Monday, Feb. 28.

According to the original poster (OP), the game will be based in Spain. It will be named Flamencio Region. To add, Mr. X speculated the possible final types of the three starters.

The source wrote that Sprigatito's name is based on Spring (Spriga) and little cat (gatito). This cat-like creature will become an emperor or a goddess cat which will retain its four legs. It is rumored to be a Grass/Fairy Pokemon.

Next, the little croc Fuecoco is based on Fire (Fuego) and Crocodile (coco). Obviously, many players knew that this starter had the potential to become a Fire/Dragon Pokemon for its final evolution. However, Mr. X posted that this Crocodile dinosaur will instead become Fire/Rock.

Finally, the water duck Quaxly will eventually turn into a duck pirate. According to the source, it will be a Water/Steel Pokemon.

If the Galar region has Professor Magnolia, the Spanish-themed region will have Professor Lantana. According to the leak, she will not be like Professor Kukui and will be focused on researching the Pokemon movement.

Speaking of regional variants, the recent leak also noted that there will be a regional bird in the form of a Water-type Flamingo which will later transform into a Water/Psychic Flamingo.

Furthermore, the early route mammal is speculated to be a Normal-type Bull which has a regional variant of Normal/Dark bull.

Of course, every mainline Pokemon game has a villain organization that hinders the protagonist on his/her journey. For this part, "Pokemon Scarlet and Violet" could have Team Jolly which specializes in stealing special artifacts.

Regarding the gyms, the source continued that it will depend on the game version.

  • * 1st Gym - Normal

  • * 2nd Gym - Ground or Electric

  • * 3rd Gym - Poison

  • * 4th Gym - Steel

  • * 5th Gym - Flying

  • * 6th Gym - Fire

  • * 7th Gym - Bug or Fighting

  • * 8th Gym - Ghost

The post also included that more news will be announced on March 20.

Since these are just speculations, it is always better to take them with a pinch of salt. For official confirmation, all we can do is wait for Game Freak and the Pokemon Company's announcement soon.
