Halo Infinite Announces Last Spartan Standing Mode That Looks Very Much Like A Battle Royale

Halo Infinite Season 2 Brings A Mode That Looks Like Battle Royale - But Isn't

Halo Infinite Season 2 is upon us, and the latest trailer for it introduced a new game mode that looks very much like a battle royale.

The aforementioned mode is called Last Spartan Standing. According to GameSpot, it involves 12 players spawning into Big Team Battle (BTB) maps with nothing but "confined" loadouts and only five respawns. The only goal is simple: be the last Spartan standing. Run out of your five lives, and it's game over.

Here is the Halo Infinite Season 2 preview if you'd like to check it out:

Developer 343 Industries didn't specifically use the term "battle royale" to describe Last Spartan Standing, however. In fact, the trailer only mentioned it as an "Elimination" mode with the mode's name flashing on the screen, indicating that while it might have the same goal as a battle royale, it doesn't have the same scale.

And that would be right, which also means that Halo Infinite is not looking to compete with established battle royale giants in PUBG and Fortnite, for instance. 343 officially considers the mode a free-for-all in a blog post on Halo Waypoint detailing all the new modes for Season 2. Furthermore, there are also other details that make it its own game mode as supposed to be just another battle royale rehash.

For one, players can upgrade to a different weapon whenever they get a kill in the match. This is something that 343 definitely took from Escalation Slayer, a classic game mode in the Halo games of old. Aside from that, anybody who runs out of respawns can watch the match finish or leave without getting a penalty.

Of course, the most obvious difference is that there are only 12 players vying for the title of Last Spartan Standing, far, far less than the typical battle royale match these days.

Season 2 of Halo Infinite, called 'Lone Wolves,' is scheduled to launch on May 3rd.

Other New Game Modes For Halo Infinite Season 2

As you can see, Last Spartan Standing isn't the only new game mode coming with the second season of Halo Infinite.

343 is also bringing these other modes for players to enjoy:

  • Land Grab: This game mode works much like Strongholds, but with a few twists. As soon as a team captures a specific zone, it gets locked in and they earn a point. The first one to score 11 points wins, writes WindowsCentral.

  • King of the Hill: A long-time fan-favorite since the OG Halo back in the day, and it works very much the same in Infinite aside from another twist. The map spawns a neutral hill, which two teams of players battle to take control of and earn points in the process. Players earn points for their teams by entering the hill uncontested and capturing it until the capture bar fills up. A new hill will spawn somewhere else and players need to do the same to it.
