Diablo Immortal May Not be Released in Belgium, The Netherlands — But Why?

The release of Diablo Immortal is almost there, but there is some bad news for some fans in Europe.

Diablo Immortal is reportedly not releasing in two European countries, specifically The Netherlands and Belgium. This is because the two countries have laws against loot boxes, which the game will have.

Loot boxes are considered a form of gambling in these countries, which makes them illegal. While it is possible for the residents of these two coutnries to download the game some other way, it is being pointed out that downloading the game from another country is illegal.

Diablo Immortal fans in Belgium and The Netherlands are reportedly not going to get to play the game due their countries' laws against loot boxes.

According to a report by Eurogamer, this move has been confirmed to a Dutch news site, Tweakers, by an Activision Blizzard Benelux communications manager. This means that the PC beta as well as the mobile launch for the game have also been reportedly scrapped as well.

PC Gamer says that a message regarding the matter has also been uploaded on the Diablo Immortal subreddit by someone claiming to be a Blizzard support agent. "Unfortunately players in the Netherlands and Belgium will not be able to install Diablo Immortal due to the countries' gambling restrictions," the message reads.

Both Eurogamer and PC Gamer's reports note that both European countries have declared in 2018 that loot boxes are a form of gambling and are therefore illegal.

Can Belgian, Dutch Resident Download the Game From Another Country?

This move by Activision Blizzard will undoubtedly disappoint fans of the game who reside in Belgium and The Netherlands. But can they possibily download the game from another country instead? Technically, yes, but it has its risks.

The message posted on the Diablo Immortal subreddit warns that it is very much illegal for Belgian and Dutch residents to download the game from another country. PC Gamer's report points out that "even if you don't get busted for your scofflaw ways, you might get banned."
