More Female League Of Legends Champions Are Coming As A Way Of 'Balancing' The Roster

Riot Wants To Add More Female League Of Legends Champions To Balance The Roster

In the future, League Of Legends fans should expect more female champions to arrive as developer Riot Games is looking to keep the roster balanced.

This was revealed in a Reddit comment by Ryan "Reave3" Mireles, who serves as the game's lead champion producer. As reported by DotESports, Mireles explained that the devs are currently looking to make sure that there's a 50/50 split between male and female LoL champions. This decision stems from a few years back when they took a look at the current roster and realized that there's a 60/40 split.

Mireles' comment was a reply to another comment on a post on the League subreddit. The comment that Reav3 replied to was somebody who said they felt like female champions "get more love" than male ones. This prompted Mireles to reply about the time they noticed the 60/40 split and the development team's assumption that it's better to have it 50/50 "long-term."

As a result, the team at Riot Games has been adding more female LoL champions than male ones on average "for the last few years." He also said that they aim to continue doing so until they achieve the perfect 50/50 split.

This has been made quite apparent with the last champion launched, Bel'Veth. As the 160th League Of Legends character to be added, Bel'Veth was first revealed back in September of last year, reports Dexerto. She was billed as follows: "An overwhelming new jungler that should fill a Void in all your hearts."

It is also worth noting that seven out of the ten most recent champions to be added to the League were female. Only three were male: Virgo, Yone, and Akshan. Bel'Veth joins Zeri, Vex, Gwen, Rell, Samira, and Renata Glasc, as per a post by SirusGaming.

To cap things off, Riot also made headlines with the Arcane TV series on Netflix, which features another popular female LoL champion: Jinx. The series itself, while a testament to Riot's plans of making League more balanced in terms of female and male champions, has received stellar reviews so far and is likely due for a second season, according to Win.gg.

The Popularity Of Female League Of Legends Champions

There might still be more male than female champions in LoL as of this writing. But if you look at the most popular ones in terms of pick rate, you'll notice how the list already includes female characters in them.

In a post by GlobalGaming, it was revealed that Arcane star Jinx has the second-highest pick rate in LoL, behind AD carry Jhin. Jinx has a pick rate of 27.54% compared to Jhin's 31.23% - it's not that close, but also not that far. However, the next female hero won't be found until the sixth place in the list: Lux, with a relatively meager 4% pick rate.

Either way, this isn't the only indication that League players are quite enamored with female champions. A quick Google search for the "most popular female LoL champions" will give you results like "the hottest female LoL champions" - obvious proof of their popularity as a whole. Well, it looks like Riot doesn't want to disappoint.
