No, The Next Assassin's Creed Might Not Go Aztec At All

Assassin's Creed Aztec Rumors Get Shot Down

There were recent rumors saying that Assassin's Creed might feature an Aztec setting, but numerous counterclaims are now saying this isn't the case at all.

According to GameSpot, the Assassin's Creed Aztec setting will reportedly be part of the live service title AC Infinity. But Bloomberg's Jason Schreier (who's made a name for himself for his leaks and insider information) says that while AC Infinity will explore different time periods, none of them are Aztec. Here's a part of his recent Reddit post about the subject:

"The next game is Rift, which is set in Baghdad. After that will be Infinity, and while that's going to include a bunch of different games/experiences/biomes/whatever you want to call them, I've heard about the main two and neither of them are Aztec."

As for what the "main two" time periods Schreier claims to have heard about, he didn't elaborate further. However, his statement is still pretty much in line with other rumors concerning Rift (the reported former Valhalla DLC-turned standalone game featuring Basim) and AC Infinity, which Ubisoft has already confirmed the existence of.

The rumor that the next Assassin's Creed will be Aztec came from YouTuber Jeremy Penter of the channel ACG. As per ComicBook.com, Penter's claim was quite simple and straightforward: he just mentioned the next game "will be Aztecs." That's it.

He posted this claim on Twitter with absolutely nothing else backing it up, so there's no way to confirm whether this rumor has some basis in truth or is just complete hogwash. Plus, confirmed to Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, he really doesn't have a lot of journalistic insider clout.

Schreier writes further about Penter's bold claim (via PlayStation Lifestyle), since he himself seems quite confident that the next game is the Basim-starring Rift:

"Would be some wacky time travel shenanigans if Basim went to the Aztec Empire. Maybe there's some super secret spinoff in production somewhere, but I haven't heard of it!"

Either way, Ubisoft could reveal even more information about the next game in the coming months, as part of their Assassin's Creed Celebration. Or maybe not, so don't quote us on that.

Why An Assassin's Creed Aztec Setting Would've Made Sense

Whether or not an Aztec setting for Ubisoft's stabby franchise is accurate, The Loadout argues it would still make an excellent time period for the series as a whole.

For the unaware, the Aztecs were a civilization located in Mesoamerica. They fluorised from around 1300 to 1521, and were the most powerful empire in the Americas at that point. But their downfall came with the arrival of the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes, as the empire has already been weakened by rampant disease and political unrest by the time he came around.

This alone is enough to make sure that the Aztec empire is a rich treasure trove of things that can be woven into the Assassin's Creed lore. Furthermore, the empire was one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Cities such as Tenochtitlan, Teotihuacan, and Xochimilco were by all intents and purposes far more extensive than European cities such as Paris or Rome.

Their sheer size and density alone could make them excellent urban areas to explore, argues The Loadout.

But whatever happens to Assassin's Creed in the coming years, one thing is for certain: people will ALWAYS look forward to what historical period it will go next.
