LONDON, ENGLAND - MARCH 28: A detailed view of a PS4 controller as players practice during day one of the 2019 ePremier League Finals at Gfinity Arena on March 28, 2019 in London, England.

The tech and gaming giant, according to GameRant, recently filed a patent for a so-called AI training model. This mode, as per the patent, is designed to study a gamer's playstyle alongside the current sequence of the game they're playing. Then, the data it collects will be used to help train the player to be better at the game overall.

The aforementioned artificial intelligence training model has been in the works at Sony since 2019. While there's not a lot of new details about the training model yet, what it purportedly will do is help players with certain difficult games (i.e. FromSoftware's Elden Ring or a handful of platformers) get rid of the trial-and-error gameplay loop and see the best strategies for completing a level or taking down a boss in real time. This will reportedly be done using a so-called "ghost runner system".

While this kind of system has already been implemented in Respawn Entertainment's Titanfall 2, Sony's version can actually be incorporated into their PlayStation consoles. Players who might need guidance about a particular game's combat system or the best route through a certain level can activate a similar ghost runner model at will.

It could work as an accessibility option that has to be toggled for use, which doesn't take away control of the game from the player's hands and also saves them time compared top learning he gameplay loop themselves. As for how Sony actually plans to introduce this into their gaming hardware, however, it is still unclear at the time of this writing.

Either way, an AI that helps players get better at games will certainly eliminate the toxicity of "git gud" culture when it comes to people asking for help finishing games/beating specific bosses. The Sony artificial intelligence will allow players to learn on their own directly from their games or PlayStation consoles, without having to dig up guides online.

Sony's Foray Into Gaming AI Projects

The aforementioned AI "game coach" is far from Sony's only attempt at building artificial intelligence for gaming purposes. And it's also not even as advanced as their other projects.

Back in February, ZDNet reported on an AI made for Gran Turismo that was said to be so good, it can beat the world's top GT players. The AI, called GT Sophy, was developed alongside first-party PlayStation and Gran Turismo developer Polyphony Digital. It was designed to "bring a realistic experience" to the game GT Sport.

Another prior attempt is an AI agent that is designed to to train or compete with the players themselves. According to a report by Video Games Chronicle, the artificial intelligence can end up creating a profile that plays so similarly to the player. The player will also have the option to actually let the AI take over and play the game for them.
