Bungie Officially Announces Destiny 2 'The Final Shape' Delay, Cites 'Bigger and Bolder' Vision

It is official! Destiny 2's last expansion based on the light and darkness saga called "The Final Shape" has been delayed to June 2024. This came from Joe Blackburn himself in a recent video posted on the game's official YouTube channel.

Officially Delayed

Joe Blackburn, game director for Destiny 2, said in a recent video that the culmination of the first 10 years of the light and darkness saga is coming to a close, albeit at a much later time than the original February 27 launch date. That said, The Final Shape will now be released on June 4, 2024.

Blackburn said that the reason for the delay is that the development team wants to deliver "an even bigger and bolder vision" that they hope will be remembered and treasured for the years to come.

What Now?

Now that the expansion has been delayed for four months, what can the players do in the meantime? According to Blackburn, new content will be introduced in the months leading up to The Final Shape's release.

First and foremost, Season of the Wish launches tomorrow and it will have an extended window compared to the game's recent seasons.

After the narrative content of Season of the Wish concludes in February, Bungie is going to release new weekly progression-based quests known as "Wishes." Besides that, players can get busy with the return of Moments of Triumph.

Moments of Triumph, for those who don't know, was a limited-time event in the original Destiny game that commemorated the achievements made by the community. Players were able to complete tasks and achievements to gain exclusive rewards, such as Shaders, Sparrows, Ships, and even real-world T-shirts! Although it is unlikely that players will get real T-shirts with the return of Moments of Triumph, they might get some cool in-game stuff for their efforts.

In addition, Bungie will move the Guardian Games up from May to March next year with a "refreshed focus" on class vs. class competition. Based on this statement, the company might include some PvP-centric challenges as opposed to just completing tasks focused on PvE like the 2023 version of the said event.

Then, Bungie will keep players up to speed with the game's narrative by releasing a two-month content update called Destiny 2: Into the Light in April. After that, players can expect three new PvP maps in May based on Europa, Neomuna, and the Terraformed Pyramid.

Blackburn also said that more information about The Final Shape will be revealed in April. He added that players can look forward to all-new gameplay, as well as the significant content additions that are still currently in development.

It is reassuring to know that the company will take the time that it needs to polish the game's upcoming expansion. But, October's massive layoffs could also be the reason for the delay, as some people have speculated.

What can you say about the expansion's delay to June of next year? Do you think the content that will be released in the months leading to The Final Shape is enough to keep players excited? Let us know in the comments!
