Supercell's tower defense styled Clash of Clans was updated yesterday, adding in the anticipated Clan Wars feature, giving clan members yet one more way to stock up on loot. But that was far from the only inclusion, apart from balance tweaks and interface improvements.
Like many mobile games out there today, Clash of Clans players have the option of using microtransactions to make the game a bit easier, using real world money to purchase gems, which can in turn be used to speed up the process for upgrading buildings or training troops, as well as being used to buy additional resources like gold and elixir.
Gems can be found in game by removing gem boxes (which were recently re-introduced in this update) or stubborn growth like trees, trunks, and mushrooms. Sometimes you find them inside, sometimes you don't, but at least you've cleared more room to expand your town.
It's a tedious method to earn gems, especially since you'll need hundreds to make them worthwhile. Besides buying them, the other option is earn them by accomplishing various achievements. Smack the young peasant girl's face on the far right of your game's screen, and you'll see what you need to do to earn however many gems, be it upgrading certain buildings, gathering a set number of resources, removing obstacles, etc. Most will reward you with a meager amount of gems, but they are leveled, so when you complete on part, there's still two more to finish, harder to complete, but the gem reward is substantially higher.
With the Clan Wars update, two more achievements are added. Not much, but more ways to earn these valuable stones is at least something. See below to see what you'll have do to earn however many gems below:
War Hero - Score 10 stars for your clan in Clan War battles. First level reward is 50 gems.
Spoils of War - Collect 800,000 gold in Clan War bonuses. First level reward is 25 gems.
