Skull and Bones Needs More Time to Cook as Beta Testers Quit Due to 'Sheer Boredom'

Ubisoft's next major title, Skull and Bones, is not looking good so far as beta testers have quit just an hour in because of the game's lack of anything fun to do.

Typically, a game should captivate its players within just an hour or two. However, that is not the case for those who were invited to test a closed beta version of the upcoming pirate game.

Sheer Boredom

Ubisoft held the second round of beta testing for Skull and Bones recently and the players are quite harsh with their criticism. Even though they were given six hours to try everything out, it only took less than an hour for most people, with the common reaction being that the game was just too bland and boring.

Some players took to Reddit to voice their opinions. Redditor @achilleasa said that there was no excitement in the first hour of the game, citing that there is no real combat to be had other than the pretty basic combat tutorial.

They added that they were fed with boring cutscenes and they had to do fetch quests where they would scour for resources and bring them to NPCs. "It's literally a walking simulator," said achilleasa.

If there are parts of a game that are boring to some, there should be some redeeming quality. Like, if the combat is stale, then surely, the company would have focused on the dialogue, right? But even that is not evident during the testing period.

As achilleasa pointed out, the dialogue leaves a lot to be desired. It even went to a point that they were skipping cutscenes because it seemed like there was nothing salvageable about the discussion. "Skipping dialogue 30 minutes into the game is not what you want to see," the bored Redditor concluded.

While the OP was kind enough to spend at least an hour of their time testing the game out, another Redditor did not even last that long. They shared that it only took them 30 minutes before they uninstalled the game. The thing that made them quit so easily was the constant black loading screens they had to deal with every time they spoke to an NPC.

Redditor @dont_say_Good said that they were a part of the first beta test for Skull and Bones. They said that the issues presented by the other Redditors were the same things they had provided on the feedback form. Over a year later, the second beta test did not change a thing. They added, "They never learn from these early tests, it's amazing."

Clock is Ticking

For the uninitiated, Skull and Bones is an upcoming action-adventure game developed by Ubisoft that is loosely based on its other pirate-themed title, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Although it is a newer game, it seems that its current iteration is so bad that some people would prefer playing a title that is more than a decade old!

Skull and Bones is set for release in February of next year. However, with the concerns raised by the community, a couple of months may not be enough to address everything.

What do you think? Should Ubisoft push the release date back to, say, Q2 2024? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section!
