Nightmare Forge's Infestation 88: Mickey Mouse's Public Domain Debut in Horror Game

The earliest version of Mickey Mouse entered the public domain on January 1, 2024. As anticipated, Nightmare Forge Games seized this opportunity to introduce a chilling adaptation of the beloved character in their upcoming game, Infestation 88.

Entering the Nightmare: A Unique Take on Mickey Mouse

Scheduled for release later this year on Steam as an Early Access title, Infestation 88 plunges players into a co-op survival horror experience set in 1988. As an exterminator tasked with eliminating "twisted versions of classic characters and urban legends," players will confront a sinister Mickey Mouse among other haunting figures.

The recent public domain status only applies to Mickey Mouse's earliest appearance, dating back to the iconic 1928 Steamboat Willie. However, newer iterations of the character remain firmly under Disney's control. Legal experts foresee Disney's vigilant protection of its brand, especially Mickey Mouse, raising questions about the fate of projects inspired by the now public domain Steamboat Willie.

Infestation 88 promises a gripping narrative as players explore "unique locations" to uncover the origins of each haunting infestation. The game emphasizes teamwork, with 1-4 player co-op options, private and public lobbies, and voice chat features for effective communication.

The objective is clear: "Find the source at all costs." Each location introduces a unique "classic character" or urban legend, adding depth and variety to the gameplay. Infestation 88's randomized item system aims to enhance replayability, ensuring a fresh experience with every playthrough.
