Hackers Steal Ready or Not Source Code, Developer Void Interactive Confirms

Hackers Steal Ready or Not Source Code, Developer Void Interactive Confirms

Hackers have reportedly stolen Ready or Not's source code, developer Void Interactive confirmed, noting that no personal data was taken amid the incident.

Reports revealed that 4TB worth of data was stolen which comprised more than 2.1 million files. The game's developer stressed that no "user or staff-related information" has been leaked as an investigation is ongoing.

Other data that was stolen include console builds for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 and Xbox One and Series X/S. There have also been reports that the stolen information pertained to the game itself and that its assets and proprietary code were still intact.

The incident comes after Ready or Not had its full 1.0 update released on Steam last year following an early access version that was first launched in 2021. A representative for Void Interactive blamed the hack on "critical vulnerabilities" from the TeamCity cloud service that it uses for build management, according to GameDeveloper.

The last time that a game's source code was leaked happened last year with the original Far Cry. During that incident, the game's assets were not included and it appears to still be active despite the hack.

The incident also comes as stolen information is fairly common in the video game industry and in the last few years, Insomniac Games, Rockstar, and Activision Blizzard have all become victims. These have resulted in personal information being aired and development assets being spread online.

There were also some instances where the developer failed to tell their employees about the incident until well after it had already happened. Studios tend to affirm that they will do what they can to protect their employees and ask for privacy as they get their affairs in order.

Void Interactive's statement regarding the recent hack on its data was made as the incident itself was first reported back in March. The company also said that based on evidence from their ongoing investigation, the extent of the hack was limited to TeamCity's services interface, said PCGamer.

Stealing 4TB Worth of Data

It also noted that as a consequence, the hackers were able to obtain screenshots of top-level projects and company-related information. However, Void Interactive said that it did not involve any sensitive data leakage.

Prior to its full release, Ready or Not had a rough pre-release period that saw the developer separate from the game's original publisher Team17. There was also a brief time when the game itself was removed from Steam.

The company also courted controversy when it decided to include a school shooting level and a nightclub shooting level. These were added to the game on the 6th anniversary of the 2016 Pulse Nightclub mass murder in Florida that killed 49 people and injured 53 others.

Players of the game have also recently complained about the prevalence of bugs and the lack of new features and content. The full launch of the game also received a lot of criticism from players for gameplay changes and issues that remained unaddressed for several months, according to Kotaku.
