'Secrets of Strixhaven MTG' Set Reveals New Mechanics, Elder Dragons Return, More

Wizards and dragons and spells. You name it.

"Magic: The Gathering" returns to the plane of Arcavios in "Secrets of Strixhaven," a new set that continues the aftermath of the devastating Phyrexian invasion from March of the Machine.

After the magical school of Strixhaven was nearly destroyed, its students used the powerful Invocation of the Founders to repel the invaders. Although successful, the spell left the campus in ruins, and the world of Arcavios has carried deep magical and emotional scars ever since.

Narrative lead Lauren Bond noted that the set explores both the rebuilt Strixhaven campus and the wider plane, showing how life has permanently changed following the invasion.

Strixhaven Colleges and Color Identity Mechanics

The set continues to emphasize Strixhaven's five colleges, each defined by a two-color identity and a unique magical philosophy.

According to MTG, Lorehold represents red-white archaemancy and historical magic. Prismari combines blue-red elemental artistry. Quandrix focuses on green-blue mathematical and theoretical magic. Silverquill boasts white-black word-based sorcery, while Witherbloom explores black-green life and death nature magic.

Unlike the original release, "Secrets of Strixhaven" introduces more distinct mechanics tied to each college, giving them stronger gameplay identities and more strategic depth across decks and playstyles.

Elder Dragons, Professors, and Planeswalker Returns

The five elder dragons who founded Strixhaven return as major legendary cards, reinforcing the identity of each college. Mascots also receive upgraded treatment, now appearing as full creature cards rather than simple tokens.

Two new planeswalker professors join the set. Ral Zarek returns as a control-focused lecturer with disruptive abilities, while Professor Dellian Fel symbolizes Witherbloom's philosophy through life-drain effects, removal tools, and long-term value generation.

New Mechanics: Prepare, Paradigm, and College Keywords

According to Polygon, a new mechanic called Prepare allows creatures to store spell effects that can later be cast as copied spells, blending combat and spellcasting in new strategic ways.

Each college also receives its own keyword mechanic, including Repartee, Opus, Infusion, Flashback, and Increment. These mechanics deepen gameplay variety and reinforce each college's identity.

The set also introduces Paradigm, a system that allows players to reuse foundational spells over time, representing the gradual mastery and evolution of magical knowledge.

Mystical Archive and Magic's Expanding Legacy

The popular Mystical Archive bonus sheet returns, featuring 65 reprinted instant and sorcery cards from across Magic's history. This includes Japanese alternate-art versions and premium foils designed for collectors and competitive players alike.

It would be cooler if "MTG" pulls a good April Fools' Day surprise for fans. That would be the best gift for all gamers and collectors.
