'Minecraft' Console Sales Beat PC Sales- Xbox 360 and PS3 Versions Have Sold More Copies Than PC And Mac

54 million copies of Minecraft have been sold so far, and the majority of those have been to console owners.

Minecraft Update 1.8 Brings New Guardian Mob To The Water

Mojang's Patrick Geuder took to Twitter yesterday with the news. "Minecraft console editions together just passed Minecraft for PC/Mac. And across all platforms we've sold almost 54 million copies." That includes PC, console, and mobile releases, although it's an impressive number for any game.

It's pretty astonishing to see the popularity of the console versions, actually. Minecraft has a huge and robust modding community on PC, and it first started out there, but the Xbox 360 Edition has been absurdly popular. Still, who would have assumed it would have caught on like this?

Minecraft PS4 And Vita Edition Release Dates Confirmed: Allow Cross-buy, PS3 Owners Upgrade For Cheap

Sales are only going to keep increasing, too. Mojang and 4J Studios have constantly released new updates for each individual version of the game, playing to each version's strengths, and there are more ports on the way.

This August will see Minecraft hit the Xbox One, PS4 and PS Vita, and gamers hungry for versions on their new consoles will certainly add a few more millions to those sales numbers. The next-gen versions are coming with increased map size and other extras, and can be upgraded to for just $5 by anyone who owns a current-gen version of the game. The Vita version is hugely anticipated as well, as it will offer the full Minecraft experience in portable format for the first time, allowing PS3 gamers to continue to build worlds and fight off mobs on the go.

It's hard to see Mojang being upset with this turn of events.
