Time Warner Cable Controversy Arises As Company Experiences Nationwide Service Outage

Time Warner Cable Customers Without Internet Across the Country

Time Warner claims that in the early hours of morning today, all of its internet coverage around the U.S. went dark. An error made during routine maintenance knocked out the service around 4:30 a.m. ET.

An outage of this size does not happen very often--TWC provides internet coverage to 11.4 million customers everyday.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was not happy about the news of the outage, and will keep the mistake in mind when looking at Comcast's desired acquisition of his state's TWC.

"I have directed the New York State Department of Public Service to investigate this outage as part of its review of Comcast's proposed merger with Time Warner," Cuomo said in a statement today. "The Department will also review whether the outage affected Time Warner's provision of telephone service in any way. In addition, the Department will include its analysis of this event in its ongoing study of the telecom industry, which is exploring potential changes to the regulatory landscape pertaining to telephone, internet and cable."

The issue was resolved within a few hours, although some internet consumers have reported lingering problems.

"As of 6 a.m. ET services were largely restored as updates continue to bring all customers back online," Time Warner said in a statement.

And, somewhere in New York, there's a TWC employee likely being fired.
