New Samsung Smartwatch Announced: Gear S Makes Calls Without A Connected Smartphone, Boasts Curved AMOLED Display

New Smartwatch from Samsung Takes Calls From Your Wrist Without A Connected Phone

Samsung announced a new smartwatch today, one that's meant to be a major improvement from any of its other wearables. The Gear S smartwatch includes 3G connectivity, which means you can use it independently of your Samsung smartphone.

None of Samsung's previous smartwatches have included their own modem, they all needed to be paired with a phone in order to display texts or push notifications. The newest from Samsung even lets users make and receive phone calls from their wrist--even if there is no smartphone around.

The Gear S is a massive step forward in other ways as well. It features a curved AMOLED display measuring 2-inches diagonally, with a 360x480 resolution. Paired with the internal modem, the watch can also connect via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

Like Samsung's Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo released earlier this year, the Gear S runs on the South Korean's homegrown mobile operating system, Tizen.

"Samsung is leading this exciting and rapidly developing wearable category through progressive innovation," JK Shin, the CEO and head of IT and mobile communication at Samsung, said in a statement. "The Samsung Gear S redefines the idea of the smart wearable and the culture of mobile communication. It will let consumers live a truly connected life anywhere, anytime."

While the 3G connectivity is a needed innovation, the curved display may be what really sets this smartwatch apart.
