iPhone 6 Plus Battery Life Is Much Better Than iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 Roughly Equal

iPhone 6 Plus Battery Life Will Be Major Selling Point

Apple caused ripples throughout the world yesterday by pulling back the curtain on its long-rumored new iPhone. Actually, CEO Tim Cook introduced us to two new iPhones, repeating the pattern from last year: the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus.

Size is the main differentiating factor between the two. The iPhone 6 display measures 4.7-inches diagonally, while the 6 Plus is a pocket-filling 5.5-inches. In comparison, last year's model, the iPhone 5S had a 4-inch screen.

Besides packing in more pixels, there are other benefits to having the larger screen--a tactic that was first used by Apple rival Samsung several years ago, reversing a trend of the tech world being focused on making everything smaller.

The 6 Plus boasts a battery that the 5S could only dream about. Compared to last year's iPhone, video playback on the iPhone 6 Plus uses 14 percent less battery, and battery life for voice calls is improved 24 percent.

In a statement, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says that the flagship iPhone 6 Plus battery "is significantly better" and that "battery life (on the iPhone 6 Plus) will be a big selling point for people."

While Munster doesn't see a whole lot of difference between the battery life of the 5S and the regular iPhone 6 (which certainly drew criticism), he sees a clear benefit to the 6 Plus' bigger body. He also expects the phones to sell out by December.
