Paradox Development Studio has released its eighth major DLC update to its popular strategy game Crusader Kings II, adding in the "Father of Europe" himself, Charlemagne.

The inclusion of the Charlemagne allows players to start games of Crusader Kings II almost 100 years earlier in 769 AD, 31 years before Charlemagne would be crowned emperor of what would later become known as the Holy Roman Empire. The expansion also adds story elements specific to Charlemagne so players can chart the rise of one of history's longest lasting empires.

The DLC pack also adds a couple of new elements to standard gameplay as well. The add-on includes a new mechanic for changing seasons and making areas with different climates feel unique. The expansion also retools the game's regency system.

Charlemagne first rose to power in the eighth century, with holdings in present-day Italy and France. On Christmas Day in 800 AD, he was crowned emperor, uniting large swaths of Western Europe under a single emperor for the first time since the Western Roman Empire fell more than 200 years earlier. Charlemagne is one of the most powerful and important Europeans in history, well worthy of an entire DLC pack.

Crusader Kings II: Charlemagne is available on PC now for $14.99. For those Crusader Kings II players who aren't ready to shell out some money for DLC, extra content is still coming your way via a free update from Paradox. This update is also available today, and it polishes up how the game treats the nomadic tribes players encounter as they bring more of the continent under their control.

Crusader Kings II is available for PC.
