'Dark Knight Rises' Trailer Reveals Bane's Genius, Batman's Doom

Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises" new trailer hints that Batman (Bruce Wayne) played by Christian Bale, may finally meet his doom with the legend coming to an end.

Facing off against an intelligent and physically imposing villain, Batman will look for more aid if he is to defeat Bane in Nolan's epic finale.

The film is set eight years after "The Dark Knight" and the end trilogy features new characters in Selina Kyle played by Anne Hathaway and Bane played by Tom Hardy.

The 2 minutes 19 seconds trailer showed Gotham City in chaos  bridges collapsing, football fields exploding, and terrorists overtaking the streets.

Amidst the chaos in the city, we see the Batman is held captive by terrorist Bane, who calls himself "Gotham's reckoning" and promises a punishment which will be more severe than death.  A young kid sketches the symbol of Batman and asks Blake if he (Batman) is coming back, to which we get a response of uncertainty.

From piecing together the trailer's sequences, one can assume that Nolan  referenced the story arc from the Batman comic series titled "Knightfall." The comic series introduced the caped crusader's arch nemesis Bane as he cripples the Batman in taking over Gotham City.  Unlike most villains, Bane is highly intelligent and desired something different than The Joker. He's a purist who is out to prove himself and search for meaning in life.

In the comics, Bane plotted to indirectly weaken  Batman by breaking out criminals from prison and forcing the hero to put them all back in.  The mental and physical fatigue would affect Batman as Bane would later discover Brue Wayne's alter ego.  Bane tracked down Wayne and later defeats him in battle by breaking his back.

Similarities to the story can be found in "The Dark Knight Rises" trailers.  Revealed sequences show a weakened Bruce Wayne needing the aid of a walking stick and wheelchair.  Another sequence showcased an epic battle between Bane and Batman, ending with a shattered piece of Batman's mask in Bane's hand.

Other interesting plots from the comic's Knightfall series include Batman rescuing Gotham's mayor from the villain Scarecrow, who douses Batman with fear toxins.  This was a breaking point as Batman fell to exhaustion and setting the stage for Bane's attack. In another separate comic series titled Batman: Legacy, Bane teams up with Ra's al Ghul for a rematch with Batman.

The Dark Knight Rises trailer ends with shots of The Bat hovercraft flying across Gotham in an attempt to project the end of the epic and maybe conclude the legend. With Nolan bringing the Trilogy to an end, "The Dark Knight Rises" might just be the fall of the great legend Batman.

Will we see cameos from the Scarecrow and Ra's al Ghul in Nolan's version of the Dark Knight story?

Fans will have to wait and see what unfolds when "The Dark Knight Rises" hit theatres on July 20, 2012.
