FreeSpace Tactics Miniatures Game Kickstarter Launches: Fallout Designer Creates Tabletop Version Of Iconic Series

FreeSpace Is Returning As A Miniatures Tabletop Game!

Interplay has teamed up with designer Chris Taylor (Fallout, Starfleet Command) to bring back the classic FreeSpace... as a miniatures tabletop game. They're seeking funding on Kickstarter right this moment, and this is the only way to get it.

Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition Rulebook Released

This may be the first time this has been done, but this Kickstarter campaign will be your only chance to pick up the game. FreeSpace Tactics will be available exclusively to backers!

For those who have never witnessed its glory, Descent: FreeSpace was a space combat sim that launched in 1998. Its sequel, Freespace 2, released the following year and is still regarded as one of the finest of the genre, butting heads against the popular Wing Commander and X-Wing series of the time. No one did dogfights like FreeSpace 2. No one.

Fans have always cried for a sequel but this might be the closest we get- a miniatures tabletop game in the vein of the Star Wars Miniatures Game.

"I designed Freespace Tactics from the ground up to replicate the frenzied dogfights of the video game," said designer Chris Taylor. "Rather than focus on the charts and measurements typical of miniatures war gaming, Freespace Tactics is made to be fast-paced with a lot of room for individual style."

The game supports 2-4 players on a 3' by 3' tabletop, where players use move cards to maneuver ships, launch attacks, and try not to smash into each other. There will be six scenarios available that change the game up in a variety of ways. Backers will also get a seperate card game that will be made available as print-and-play digital files soon after the campaign finishes.

Interplay is being helped out by tabletop game publisher Cryptozoic Entertainment.

"Interplay and Cryptozoic are neighbors and good friends," said John Nee, CEO of Cryptozoic, "so we knew early on that they were working on something special with FreeSpace Tactics. We came onboard to help with design support, playtesting, and the promotional campaign, using our experience to improve an already amazing product. Chris Taylor is not only a world-class video game designer, but an incredible tabletop game designer. With FreeSpace Tactics, he has made an excellent ship-to-ship strategy game that is fun and expandable and may take over your entire life."

They have a funding goal of $75,000 and 30 days to achieve it. Stretch goals will allow the game to contain more pilots and more miniatures! Check out the Kickstarter right here and pick up FreeSpace 2 on GOG.com, where it's currently on sale for a mere $5.
