Watch The First Gameplay Footage Of 'Total War: Arena'

The first gameplay footage of the free-to-play Total War: Arena has been released in a trailer.

The video has been posted as a promotion for the closed alpha, which you can sign up for here. This is the first time we're seeing the game in action, getting a glimpse of its players vs player online team battles.

The title will use elements from the Total War franchise, but has been designed as a brand new multiplayer-focused game. Players control different armies in 10v10 matches, leading to the controlled chaos you see in the video below. The alpha is currently only available in Europe, but U.S. servers are being added "soon".

You can catch the first live match this weekend courtesy of a Creative Assembly stream. The official Total War Twitch channel will stream a match from an ESL event in Cologne on Saturday, 23 May at 17:00 CEST.

Enjoy the trailer below, which looks similar to Total War with some differences fans will notice. The number of players controlling armies in any battle is big compared to matches in the traditional games online, but it does look like the armies themselves are smaller. It remains to be seen what F2P elements are in the game, but hopefully CA steers away from any pay-to-win options--such mechanics would be incredibly frustrating in a Total War game.
