Frictional Games Offers Amnesia: The Dark Descent Free For 24 Hours

Arguably, one of the scariest games to ever grace the industry, Amnesia: The Dark Descent will be made available for free for 24 hours. According to reports, the move was in preparation for next week's SOMA and the offer will run until 10 AM PST on Wednesday. On top of the free game, Frictional Games is also offering the Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs and earlier series of the game Penumbra with an 80 percent slash off.

The Dark Descent was launched 4 years ago, but is still considered as one of the scariest game and has helped launched thousands of YouTube stars because of the game's Water Level or the Flooded Archives.

Amnesia was released in 2010 for the Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and Onlive platforms. The game is played from a first person perspective and uses physics-based puzzles and interactions such as opening doors and fixing machineries.

The game also introduced a new attack on health bars as it used a sanity bar instead of the latter. The sanity bar will be reduced based on characters long exposure in darkness, witnessing unsettling events, or staring at monsters. The insanity bar if depleted will make the main character, Daniel, to have auditory and visual hallucinations which draw monsters close to him.

Amnesia does not equip Daniel any weapons to battle monsters so, in effect, the only way he can escape monsters is to run away from them until it completely goes out of the picture. The game received an aggregate score of around 86% from both GameRankings and Metacritic.

The game's sequel, A Machine of Pigs was released in 2013 and was developed by The Chinese Room and was published by Frictional Games. A Machine of Pigs is somewhat an indirect sequel of The Dark Descent which carries a different character and storyline.
