Nintendo's latest attempt to take down YouTube videos of their games, most specifically Mario, are one of the reasons why they lagged behind Sony and Microsoft considering that they pioneered the industry. Nintendo took leaps and bounds to down mod videos of Mario that were uploaded in the popular social video website YouTube, perhaps in relation to their commemorative Mario Maker game.
A tech expert said that Nintendo's move to take out the mod videos of their game is a wake-up call for the company to step up, saying the mod players were obviously beating the Nintendo in its own game. The expert also pointed out that the modding community for the Mario Bros. has been there, building new and more challenging stages for the game they love. They also pointed out that Nintendo must have missed the point to treat the modding community as their enemies, where in fact, they are the fans of the game and the company.
On the other side of the fence, Sony and Microsoft are open to this type of interaction with their modding fans. Unlike Nintendo's reaction, they actually encourage modders to use and abuse the games they release, since first, it is a good publicity and marketing. Secondly, they can get fresh and new ideas from the modding community for free.
Take Skyrim for instance, Bethesda had no issues what so ever for people who modify the game and upload it in YouTube. As a matter of fact, they even promote the mod versions of the game, because it creates buzz for the game itself, and it generates sales for them.
Nintendo is clearly a control freak with what they have and one thing that might have been holding them back from getting in the proper form is their openness to the public. Imagine how massive can they get if you can play the Super Mario Bros. in Xbox and Sony PlayStation or Skyrim in the Wii U console.
