'Doom' Release Date, Review & Trailer: 5 Things to Know About the Upcoming PS4, Xbox One & PC Shooter

'Doom' Release Date, Review & Trailer: 5 Things to Know About the Upcoming PS4, Xbox One & PC Shooter

The much-awaited reboot to id Software's first-person shooter, "Doom," arrives on May 13 for the PS4, Xbox One and PC. Followers of the franchise would know that the upcoming title is actually fourth in the series, following "Doom 3" which was released in 2004.

Horror takes no break in "Doom," and newcomers should best beware that the title - obviously - is not for the faint of heart. As far as the trailers are concerned, it's going to be mayhem, and a bloody one on that note.

Whether you're new or you've enjoyed the title's previous installments, here are five essential things to know and expect from the revamped "Doom."

1. It gets worse than "Nightmare."

"Doom" will feature a new difficulty level called "Ultra-Nightmare," Gamereactor notes. It is said to be so difficult that nobody from id Software has managed to surpass it. Apparently, it is an upgrade from the already-tough level called "Nightmare."

2. It goes back to its roots.

Again, it must be pointed that the game is not a sequel but a reboot. Executive producer Marty Stratton describes (via Windows Central), "When we introduced the game we kinda went back and started with what inspired us about 'Doom,' what was the DNA of 'Doom' in of itself. You come to some pretty big things right off the bat - just big bad as* guns, amazing demons and movement being a fundamental, key part of the gameplay."

That being said, long-time players of the franchise are assured that the upcoming title will be familiar and remain true to its identity.

3. It's more terrifying.

Simply put, the new "Doom" is just more brutal, violent and laden with graphics that will make you feel unforgiving at the moment's notice. According to Screen Rant, players beat monsters in gory finishing moves, yet the final level has not been described other than being "truly Hell."

4. Single-player weapons

As per GameSpot, some single-player weapons include the BFG, the chainsaw, the gauss cannon and the super shotgun. Another notable feature is the lack of reloading, which obviously saves time for more kills as long as ammo is intact.

5. You can preorder now!

The upcoming game comes in two editions: (1) standard ($59.99) and (2) collector's ($119.99), both of which are now available to preorder. The Demon Multiplayer Pack is an exclusive bonus that comes with any preorder and includes one armor set, six Hack Modules, six exclusive metallic paint colors and three exclusive id logo patterns.

Are you ready to meet the hordes of Hell?
