'Civilization VI' PC Release Date, Gameplay & Trailer: Here's What to Expect

"Civilization VI" is launching on the PC on October 21, following its 2010 predecessor that has since spawned expansion packs "Gods & Kings" and "Brave New World." The news comes from developer Firaxis Games, which tipped few important things prospective players can look forward to.

For one, no drastic changes are expected, though new features are certainly worth the bet. Lead producer Dennis Shirk said, "Everything that Civilization players have loved in Civilization V, we're bringing forward, in addition to putting on the new gameplay from Civilization VI."

According to The Verge, the new title's lack of massive changes isn't surprising, given its predecessor's established success. The outlet says over 8 million copies have been sold at this point and Firaxis is using "Civilization V" as a "stepping stone."

For those unfamiliar with the franchise, expect to take on the roles of various historical figures in pursuit of building and expanding territories. One of the key changes to watch for in "Civilization VI" is the sprawling of cities, The Washington Post says, which steps up from the dense days of universities and monuments packing together in one tile. Hence, players will be able design their areas better, having more convenient space to do so.

The game is expected to utilize the same hexagonal tiles. Prospective gamers can also expect the addition of "eurekas," which will be relevant in the research of technologies.

Another interesting addition is the fact that non-human opponents will now have their own historial agenda, including "extra random" ones. This tidbit is tipped by the game's AI lead Andrew Garrett. Note that these agendas will be flexible based on the player's interaction with such characters, all being part of "dynamic diplomacy." In reference to these AI folks, Garrett points, "We want them to be understandable to the player, but also to provide a challenge and a different game each time."

Long-time franchise fans will also be glad to know that "Civilization VI" will have better graphics, which do not just serve aesthetics, but functionality as well. This time, buildings, lands and units are laid in bright, primary colors, Ars Technica says. The outlet described it as more "cartoony" compared to the visuals of "Civilization V" and "Civilization: Beyond Earth."

The game is now availble to preorder at Steam for $59.99. See trailer below!
