PS4 News & Updates: Patch 3.55 Released

Sony's released an update for the Playstation 4 firmware after all the buzz of E3—but since Sony never made a big deal about the patch, it doesn't actually provide any significant upgrades to the console.

According to Gamespot, the 300 MB patch, just codenamed Update 3.55, simply "improves the quality of the system performance," and that's about it. It is literally what's stated in the patch notes. Despite the patch release's timing, the patch appears to have nothing to do with anything announced by Sony in last week's E3 event.

This probably isn't the PS4 update players have been demanding from Sony for quite a while now. Playstation 4 owners have been demanding some pretty necessary changes to the console's built-in operating system and the Playstation Network, no matter how preferable it may seem to its rival, Microsoft's Xbox One.

A movement called #BetterPSN has been consistently petitioning Sony on the internet for the inclusion of such features such as a wishlist on the PSN Store, gifting games to other users, the option to change usernames, PS4 library search, deleting games in the library, viewing friends' online status (and being invisible to other friends), an enhanced profile view with more details and information, and better cloud storage capacity. The list of suggested improvements put together by Playstation Lifestyle shows how basic the Playstation Network apparently is.

The PS4 Neo, Sony's semi-next generation upgrade to the PS4 that will be bringing extra graphics power and full 4K compatibility, is rumored to be releasing sometime later this year. (The PS4 Neo, for those who haven't heard yet, will not be supplanting the original PS4; players will still be able to play newer games on the PS4 if they don't have a Neo.)
