Speaking with The Hollywood Reported, "Law & Order: SVU" Season 18 showrunner Warren Leight revealed that Mike Dodds' death in the "Law & Order: SVU" Season 17 finale was supposed to show people how dangerous it is to be a police officer.

"We just also wanted to give respect to the police officers who do risk their lives every day and whose families don't know if they're ever coming home," the "Law & Order: SVU" Season 18 showrunner said. "What is that loss like? What is that anxiety like for families of police officers?"

"Law & Order: SVU" season 18 will return on September 21, Wednesday, at 9 p.m. EST.
