Assassin's Creed 3 Release Date: New Game Could Be The Beginning Of A New Trilogy Based On Connor

The Assassin-Templar war has moved to the new world in Assassin's Creed III with series protagonist Desmond Miles reliving the memories of his half-English, half-Native American ancestor.

Connor is drawn in to the battle against oppression and tyranny when colonist attacks his home. Connor faces the annihilation of liberty. But how will fans relate to the new hero? Well Assassin's Creed 3 associate producer Julien Laferrière recently told Eurogamer that if fans like Connor there will be more games based on the character.

"We're going to see how players react to the guy [Connor] for sure," Laferrière said. "You'll get to experience portions of his life, you'll see why he becomes an assassin and what his motivations are. The more you know about Connor the more you'll love him, but in the end we'll see what the reception is like."

The previous number iteration of Assassin's Creed featured the hero Ezio and spawned two sequels Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Revelations. According to Laferrière, "we made three games with Ezio because people loved Ezio." This allowed the development team more time crafting the Assassin's Creed III.

"Assassin's Creed 3 is the product of three years of development, but [because of that] we also now have a new engine, AnvilNext," Laferrière told Eurogamer."Our goal is to make the best game possible. If there's a good game every year, I'll play it every year. It's like a good television series that goes on for a while. I like Seinfeld, it went on for seven seasons and most of them were pretty good. If they had a bad season, would I have lost interest? Maybe, maybe not. But when the quality is there, the frequency is not an issue."

The new engine, Anvil Next, was built from the ground up and the engine is said to utilize the full capability of current generation systems to deliver a "next-gen Assassin's Creed experience." So it seems to make sense the company would want to get the most out of its new engine by releasing a full trilogy based on Connor's story, as long as the quality of the franchise isn't sacrificed.

"I understand the worries of the fans," Laferrière said to Eurogamer. "But we share the same world. We wouldn't want to let down the franchise and release crappy games."

Assassin's Creed III is developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and Microsoft Windows. It will be released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, beginning in North America on Oct. 30, with a Microsoft Windows version following on Nov. 20. The Wii U version of Assassin's Creed III will be released simultaneously with the console on Nov. 18 in North America, and Nov. 30 in Europe.
