‘True Detective’ Season 3 Air Date, Spoilers, News & Update: Cancelled Over Robert Downey Jr. HBO Series? HBO Says No

After news of "True Detective" showrunner Nic Pizzolatto and "Iron Man" star Robert Downey Jr. teaming for a new HBO series came out, cancellation rumors surrounded "True Detective" season 3. However, the network said that the crime drama series is not entirely dead.

HBO's New Series

Fans of "True Detective" season 3 are patiently waiting for any announcement about their beloved TV series. After reports of Nic Pizzolatto's other project with Robert Downey Jr. came out, fans were anticipating the cancellation of "True Detective" season 3. Especially that Pizzolatto will both act as the writer and the executive producer for the new HBO series, Variety reported.

The new HBO drama series will reportedly feature Robert Downey Jr. in a lead role, alongside wife Susan Downey and Joe Horacek. Insiders told the website that the new HBO series could be a reboot of "Perry Mason," a project that Downey Jr. has been developing with Warner Bros for quite some time now. Fans are now thinking how can Pizzolatto manage his time between "True Detective" season 3 and the new HBO series.

'True Detective' Season 3 Not Dead

Although Nic Pizzolatto is quite busy with several projects under his belt, new HBO programming chief Casey Bloys assured fans that "True Detective" season 3 is still possible to air. Speaking to Television Critics Association's Press, Bloys revealed that he had talked to Pizzolatto about another season. He admitted that "True Detective" is too valuable franchise to let go, Entertainment Weekly reported.

More so, since Nic Pizzolatto is currently working on multiple projects, they are open to the idea of someone else penning the script while Pizzolatto supervises everything. "We're open to somebody else writing it and Nic supervising it, Casey Bloys said of "True Detective" season 3. "It's a valuable franchise, it's not dead, we just don't have a take for a third season yet."

With the assuring information about "True Detective" season 3, fans should wait a little while longer for further updates. Despite the low ratings the show has achieved during the second season, HBO is still positive to push for a third season.
