During the Spike TV Video Game Awards, Sony debuted a new trailer for The Last of Us, which revealed the game's release date for North America and Europe.
Naughty Dog's latest game will release on May 7, 2013 exclusively for the PlayStation 3. The developer is of course known for many of Sony's best exclusives including the Uncharted trilogy and the Jak and Daxter series.
The game was first revealed at the 2011 Spike TV VGAs and shortly after the announcement Naughty Dog released the following statement about the game on the Official PlayStation Blog:
"The Last of Us is a genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements to tell a character driven tale about a modern plague decimating mankind. Nature encroaches upon civilization, forcing remaining survivors to kill for food, weapons and whatever they can find. Joel, a ruthless survivor, and Ellie, a brave young teenage girl who is wise beyond her years, must work together to survive their journey across what remains of the United States."
In an interview earlier this year with Eurogamer, creative director and writer Neil Druckmann said that The Last of Us is not a "zombie-game."
"If the game was about the monsters, we would have not showed them," Druckmann said. "The story's not about them, so [we thought] let's get it out of the way."
According to the interview, Joel is an anti-hero and Ellie is a 14 year-old girl with no memory of the world before the apocalypse. Naughty Dog's Bruce Straley says, the game is about giving player choices and having players deal with the consequences of these decisions.
"It's story-driven, [but] the whole triangle is story, gameplay and art," says Straley. "As a gamer it's all about strategy and giving the player enough tools in their toolkit so that they can come upon something and choose and have the consequences play out within their choices."
