New Xbox developer kit is called Project Kryptos, according to a new report. What happened to project Durango?
So a new report from Semi Accurate via IGN says that internal sources have revealed that Microsoft's next generation console is being developed as project Kryptos. According to IGN the report reassert the rumor that the AMD chip that the console will run on is called Oban.
The article also says that Microsoft has yet to clear the rumored manufacturing troubles with that chip. The manufacturing issue could derail the console supposed release date of the 2013 holiday season.
IGN points out that these are still rumors and that Microsoft has yet to confirm anything about its new console or whether it will be releasing two consoles like previous rumors suggest.
Xbox World Magazine recently released an exposé about Microsoft's next Xbox reported via CVG. According to the article, the new system would have Blu-ray, Kinect 2.0 and a TV input to allow the new device to act as a DVR-like recording device.
Now on to the PlayStation 4, which Sony is apparently calling project Thebes. The system will also have an AMD chip at its core and is planned to be produced at Global Foundries or IBM, according to the article.
The article also says that if this is true, the chip will not enter production in till sometime after the next Xbox's Oban, meaning a projected release window for the PlayStation 4 would be between spring and autumn 2014. If this is true Microsoft would once again have a year on its chief competitor.
IGN says that this information conflicts with what has previously been rumored including the projects name, which has been referred to as Orbis by numerous sources.
In a recent article on VG27, anonymous sources said that new versions of the PS4 developer kits were being shipped around in normal PC cases with Blu-ray support. The sources also said that Sony would be shipping updated versions of the kit in January.
According to that article the Orbis kits featured AMD's A10 APU series and came with either 8GB or 16GB of RAM and a 256GB hard drive as standard. The kits also had many of the same ports as the current PlayStation 3.
