'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' Release Date, News & Update: Kurt Russell Says Film Tackles Peter Quill's Daddy Issues

As we come to the end of 2016, Marvel fans are beginning to get excited for the studio's 2017 endeavors, including the highly anticipated "Guardiasn of the Galaxy Vol. 2." While some footage was shown during July's San Diego Comic Con, it did not make it online so the rest of the "Guardians" fans across the globe are still longing for that footage.

To keep fans at bay, the ever social media savvy writer and director James Gunn took to Facebook to regularly post updates on the film's progression as it makes it to the big screen next May. One of the most anticipated news from "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is Kurt Russell's participation as Peter Quill's intergalactic father, Ego the Living Planet. Collider sat down with Russell during a press tour for his latest flick "Deepwater Horizon" and could not help but ask about him dipping his toes into a Marvel franchise.

Russell had nothing but praises for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" and the cast and crew behind it. He shared that all of them felt how "much stronger" the sequel is than the 2014 breakthrough, making for a truly exciting film. Russell also called Gunn "smart" and "sharp," echoing Vin Diesel's praises for the director right after Diesel saw footage from the film.

Russell shared that the upcoming "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" will go beyond the intergalactic swashbuckling viewers saw in the first film and will delve further into the relationships between the characters in the film. Screenrant reports that as per the 65-year old actor, "it’s more connected to human issues, family issues, parental issues, and issues that sons and daughters have with their moms and dads and their family tree, where they come from."

Russell explained that his on-screen son, played by Chris Pratt, has a few daddy issues up his sleeve. Unsurprisingly so, as the young Quill was abducted by aliens just moments after his mother passed away. Meeting his absentee father on "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" would definitely bring another layer of dynamic to the kind of superhero he is today.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" will see most of the cast returning as well as a few new faces. The film is set to arrive on May 5, 2017.
