Demon's Souls Releasing On The PlayStation Network Next Week

Demon's Souls, the spiritual successor to the Dark Souls series and PlayStation 3 Exclusive, is coming to the PlayStation Network in North America as a digital download on Tuesday Jan. 8 for $19.99.

Atlus editor Nich Maragos, who said the series success has been an unusual experience for the gaming publisher, made the announcement on the official PlayStation blog.

"A lot of unusual things go on here at Atlus, and as a publisher known for delivering great JRPG content, Demon's Souls represented something unique even for us: runaway mainstream success,"Margos wrote. "In the years since its release, Demon's Souls went far above and beyond our usual humble offerings, partly because it's such a special game. It's a Japanese-developed RPG, made by From Software, but it has a distinctly Western look and feel in the weight of its movements and the ruthlessness of its enemies and environments."

Maragos also announced that the developer is holding a special event in celebrations of Demon's Souls' digital release on the PlayStation Network. The Pure White World Tendency event will slightly reduces the game's difficulty and will open up items that can only be accessed during this "Pure White State." The event will be held from Jan. 8 to Jan. 14.

Demon's Souls is set in a dark fantasy world where players take control of a hero entering the fictional kingdom of Boletaria, which is overtaken by a mysterious mist that brings forth soul-eating demons.

As gamers travel through the kingdom slaying demons they collect souls that are used as a currency to purchase upgrades and repair battle-damaged armor. The game also utilized the PlayStation Network for a unique gameplay mechanic that allows gamers to see the actions of other players as ghost in the same area. This gameplay mechanic can reveal hidden passages or switches.
