'Game of Thrones' Season 7 Spoilers, Latest News & Update: Spin-off Already in the Works? George R.R. Martin Currently Writing Material

HBO's "Game of Thrones" will take some time before it returns next year for its penultimate season. The Emmy Award-winning show is coming to a close in two seasons, but it seems that creator George R.R. Martin isn't done with Westeros just yet.

According to IGN, George R.R. Martin is currently writing material for what may be a prequel or spin-off. Speaking backstage after their epic win at this year's Emmys, he admitted that he had a ton of "fake history" and events that led up to what "Game of Thrones" season 7 will shape up to be and that he continues to write even more material.

Martin, who was honored with the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series for the HBO show was however tight-lipped about any details about a spin-off already in the works. The "Game of Thrones" season 7 creator admitted that right now, their focus is to see the show to its completion. Martin also has two more books in the works for him, so he's definitely one with a tight schedule.

According to TVLine, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss both admitted that there is indeed more material to explore in the world of "Game of Thrones" season 7, but they won't be involved in a prequel or spin-off that may be already in the works. As per Deadline, though, the two promised that the upcoming season will be "better" than anything fans have ever seen before. Unfortunately, they did not offer any more juicy details about the upcoming season.

The HBO show made history during this year's Emmy Awards when they broke the record for the most lifetime wins for a scripted program. "Game of Thrones" season 7 will return to HBO this 2017. For more on our rumored season 7 plot, visit our reports here and here.
